Architectural Model Makers in Japan
Architectural Model Experience Across Japan
RJ Models has architectural model project experience across Japan, with published work in Tokyo, Hokkaido, Nagoya and Fukuoka.
Our Japan portfolio includes resort models for Kiroro in Hokkaido, residential and commercial models in Tokyo, the JR Central Towers & Station model in Nagoya, an office-building model in Fukuoka, and a physical model produced for Zaha Hadid Architects' historical New National Stadium design proposal in Tokyo.
These projects required different approaches to physical model making, including 3D printing, detailed façade fabrication, landscape modelling, integrated lighting, snow effects and large-format presentation. Some projects also required RJ Models' model makers to travel to Japan for on-site installation.
Rather than treating architectural model making in Japan as a single standard service, each project is developed according to its design purpose, presentation requirements, scale, level of detail and delivery conditions.
Hokkaido — Kiroro Resort Model Project Family

RJ Models produced two physical resort models for Kiroro in Hokkaido at different scales for public display. Using two scales allowed the same development to be communicated at different levels: the 1:100 model focused on architecture, façade treatment and detailed resort elements, while the 1:400 model presented the broader relationship between buildings, ski terrain and landscape.
Kiroro Resort Model — Scale 1:100
The 1:100 model required detailed treatment of the hotel buildings and their winter setting. Stone patterns were manually worked into the exterior surfaces and painted to create texture and shadow. Simulated snow was applied across the terrain and vegetation, while miniature ski-lift infrastructure was reproduced using fine wire supported by metal posts.
The model combined architecture, recreational facilities, landscape and snow effects so viewers could understand both the buildings and their relationship to the ski environment.
Kiroro Resort Model — Scale 1:400

The 1:400 model used a broader presentation scale to communicate the overall resort setting. Buildings, illuminated elements, miniature trees, skier figures, vehicles and snow-covered terrain were integrated into a single physical display.
Together, the two models demonstrate how different scales can be used for the same project family when the presentation purpose changes from detailed architectural viewing to wider site and landscape understanding.
Tokyo Project Experience
Shibuya Residential Model — Scale 1:80

RJ Models produced a 1:80 residential presentation model for a project in Shibuya, Tokyo. The model focused on the relationship between the building envelope, internal visibility, lighting and surrounding context rather than lifestyle marketing claims about the development.
Cool-white acrylic was used to filter light while partially revealing the structure behind the façade. Spot lighting, concrete wall expression, mirrored surfaces, planting, vehicles and scale figures helped communicate the architectural form and site relationship.

Zaha Hadid New National Stadium Design Proposal Model — Tokyo
Architect: Zaha Hadid Architects
Location: Tokyo, Japan
Scala: 1:1000
Production Time: 21 days

RJ Models produced a physical model for Zaha Hadid Architects' historical design proposal for Japan's New National Stadium in Tokyo.
The model represented a complex stadium concept defined by flowing geometry, long structural ribs, curved external forms and a roof structure with very few conventional straight surfaces. Translating this geometry into a physical model required a different approach from conventional rectilinear architectural models.
RJ Models reviewed and reworked the supplied 3D design information into fabrication-ready model data before producing the principal forms with 3D printing. This helped preserve the continuous geometry of the stadium shell and structural elements at 1:1000 scale.

Integrated lighting was also used to reveal the relationship between the external shell and interior spaces, allowing the proposal to be understood both as an overall architectural form and as a physical presentation model.
The model was produced for Zaha Hadid Architects' original Tokyo stadium proposal. That design was not the stadium ultimately constructed in Tokyo, and it is therefore presented here as a historical architectural design proposal rather than as the current Japan National Stadium.
Nihonbashi Takashimaya Mitsui Building Model — Tokyo
Architect: SOM
Scala: 1:200
Production Time: 30 days

RJ Models produced a 1:200 physical presentation model for the Nihonbashi Takashimaya Mitsui Building project in Tokyo.
The model focused on the project's combination of glass, granite and metal façade expression. Different materials and surface treatments were used to reproduce the contrast between transparent, reflective and solid building elements while keeping the architectural composition legible at model scale.

Tsukiji Memorial Miniature Exhibition — Tokyo

RJ Models produced a series of miniature scenes preserving the atmosphere and everyday activity of the former Tsukiji wholesale market in Tokyo.
The models recreated recognizable details including seafood stalls, auction scenes, market workers, transfer vehicles, signage, product displays and lighting. Rather than focusing on a single building, the series used miniature figures, objects, textures and working environments to capture how people experienced the historic market.
Tsukiji's wholesale operations closed in 2018 when the central wholesale market relocated to Toyosu. The miniature series therefore functions as a physical record of scenes associated with the former market, while a separate Toyosu scene reflects the transition to Tokyo's new wholesale-market location.

Nagoya — JR Central Towers & Station Model by KPF
Scala: 1:500
Model Size: Approx. 1500 × 1400 mm
Production Time: 21 days

RJ Models produced the physical model for KPF's JR Central Towers & Station project in Nagoya.
At 1:500 scale, the model was designed to communicate the high-rise composition and architectural relationship between the major building elements. Concrete walls, metal cladding, roof elements and translucent glazing were represented using different materials and fabrication treatments to keep the tower forms readable at presentation scale.

Fukuoka — Office Building Model by KPF
Scala: 1:200
Model Size: Approx. 600 × 400 mm
Production Time: 21 days

RJ Models produced a 1:200 office-building model for a KPF project in Fukuoka. The physical model focused on the building's structural framework, façade rhythm, external wall treatment and landscape relationship.
3D printing was used for selected framework elements, while controlled colour blending was applied to the façade and landscape. Integrated LED lighting added another presentation layer, allowing the building mass and façade treatment to remain legible when illuminated.

Model Delivery and Installation Experience in Japan
Architectural models intended for public display, sales presentation or long-term exhibition may require more than international shipping alone.
For the Kiroro Resort project in Hokkaido, RJ Models produced two resort models at different scales for public display. The models incorporated buildings, ski facilities, snow-covered landscape, vegetation and other site details. To support the final presentation, RJ Models also assigned model makers to travel to the project site and assist with on-site installation.
This experience is relevant to projects where larger or more detailed models require careful unpacking, assembly, positioning, lighting checks or final adjustments after arrival in Japan.
Delivery and installation requirements are reviewed individually according to model dimensions, construction, display location and project schedule.
