The Birth of 30 St. Mary Axe. RJ Models Creates the Model of the Most Ecological Building The Gherkin <\/strong><\/p>\n

On April 10, 1992, the Provisional IRA detonated a truck with 100 pounds of explosive near London’s.<\/p>\n

This killed three people and injured several others.<\/p>\n

Most of the offices in the shipping exchange and the trading hall ceased functioning.<\/p>\n

In 2004, after three-year\u00a0infrastructure, 30 St. Mary Axe welcome a brand-new iconic building, The Gherkin\u00a0(previously Swiss Re Building).<\/p>\n

The Gherkin stands at 179.8 meters tall with 50 floors. Architects from Foster+Partners are the team behind the design.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

His representative work includes HSBC Main Building, Apple Park, New York’s Hearst Tower<\/a>, London Stansted International Airport<\/a>, Greater London Authority Building (London City Hall), France\u2019s Millau Viaduct, the glass dome as part of the redesign in the restoration of the Reichstag in Berlin and many more.<\/p>\n

In 1999, Sir Norman Foster received the Pritzker Architecture Prize. <\/span><\/p>\n

At the presentation speech, the jury said: <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFrom his very first projects, it was evident that he would embrace the most advanced technology appropriate to the task, producing results sensitive to their sites, always with imaginative solutions to design problems.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In Sir Norman Foster’s design, the office areas are surrounded by external double-glazed glass curtain wall and an internal single glaze glass panel.<\/p>\n

This creates mix-mode ventilation shaft where hot and cold air exchange.<\/p>\n

The\u00a01:100 model of The Gherkin\u00a0displays\u00a0the structural concept of the interval between the internal and external curtain wall.<\/p>\n

To do this,\u00a0RJ Models has to stick the glass panels individually, tolerating no errors between each gap.<\/p>\n

The design won the 2004 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Stirling Prize.

Unlike the traditional box shape office building, 30 St. Mary Axe is in the shape of a bullet.<\/p>\n

Each floor has a diameter that changes with the curved facade of the bullet-shaped building.<\/p>\n

The circumference stretches between 162 meters to 185 meters on the 17th floor before tapering off at the top.<\/p>\n

The building’s\u00a0largest circumference is, however, only 2- meters\u00a0shorter than the building’s height, so\u00a0the building doesn’t t look cumbersome.<\/p>\n

Structurally, every level radiates outward into a 6-finger structure, forming an atrium between each finger.<\/p>\n

The atrium are linked vertically, but each floor deflects at an angle from the previous level, creating a helix structure.<\/p>\n

The triangular atrium ensures that sufficient light passes through into the interior of the building.<\/p>\n

A ventilation system is established to promote air circulation within the building using the principle of pressure change.<\/p>\n

Going back to the numerous corporation between Foster+Partner and RJ Models, starting from his first airport project, London Stansted Airport.<\/p>\n

Included in this design is a 15-meter-high\u00a0interior space, exposed beams and structural components as well as other facilities.<\/p>\n

The spiraling helix atrium creates a natural social point for the users of the building, a refreshment point or meeting point. <\/span><\/p>\n

And it also acts as a light source and function as ventilators distributing fresh air to the office units.<\/span><\/p>\n

Such an energy-saving design saves The Gherkin 50% of the energy used by the average office tower.<\/p>\n

Load Bearing Structure of 30 St. Mary Axe<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The\u00a0structural makeup of 30 St. Mary Axe\u00a0shows that the building’s\u00a0curtain wall\u00a0is also a load-bearing structure.<\/p>\n

It uses a diagonally braced structure consisting of several triangles\u00a0to support\u00a0the weight of the building’s\u00a0core.<\/p>\n

Rather than distributing the load vertically from upside-down, it distributes the weight on the cross-steel\u00a0nodes of the diagrid structure.<\/p>\n

It forms\u00a0a more stable system and helps to improve\u00a0seismic resistance.<\/p>\n
