Ihr Zweck besteht darin, Seeleute mit den neuesten Navigationsinformationen zur Sicherheit von Schiffen zu versorgen.<br \/>\nHydro 1, 2 und 3 messen die Wassertiefe in dem \u00fcber 300 Quadratkilometer gro\u00dfen Gew\u00e4sser, insbesondere im gesch\u00e4ftigen Containerhafen Kwai Chung. Eine amerikanische Werft war f\u00fcr die Konstruktion und den Bau von Hydro 2 verantwortlich und fuhr nach Fertigstellung nach Hongkong.<br \/>\nUm den Bedarf an hydrografischen Vermessungen zu decken, w\u00e4hlen die Konstrukteure einen Katamaran-Modus.
